UNI-T High-Definition Oscilloscope — Buyer's Guide
Which HD Oscilloscope Is Right for You?
UNI-T's high-definition oscilloscope lineup gives every model 12-bit vertical resolution, 16× the detail of a conventional 8-bit scope. Six series span 80 MHz to 8 GHz, with workflow scaling from portable bench scopes through R&D mainstays up to lab-grade flagship instruments. Past the shared 12-bit baseline, you're choosing bandwidth, channel count, memory depth, display size, and whether you need a built-in signal generator or mixed-signal logic capability.

The 12-bit baseline applies to every model. Past that, choose the series that matches your bandwidth and workflow.
Decision 1: Choose Your Series
Six HD series, organized by bandwidth tier and target workflow. Pick the lowest bandwidth that covers your needs — bandwidth headroom should be 3–5× the highest signal frequency you'll measure.
80 / 150 MHz
Best for: Education, portable bench, hobbyist work, 2 or 4 channels, 7" touch display
150 / 250 MHz

70 – 200 MHz
Best for: R&D bench, signal-fidelity work, embedded systems, 2 or 4 channels, 10.1" touch display
200 – 500 MHz
Best for: Mid-range MSO, automotive CAN-FD, industrial, advanced analog + 16 logic channels
350 MHz – 1 GHz
Best for: High-speed systems, R&D, protocol-rich automotive (CAN-XL, FlexRay), 5 GSa/s acquisition
8 GHz
Best for: Lab-grade flagship, USB 2.0 / Ethernet compliance, PCIe, high-speed serial, 20 GSa/s
Decision 2: Need a Built-In Signal Generator?
Standard HD Models
Full 12-bit scope without on-board AWG. Use an external function generator if you need to drive a circuit. Lowest cost option per series.
Choose if you already have a bench signal source, or your workflow is purely measurement-driven.
HD-S Models & Generator-Equipped
MSO1000HD-S adds a 25 MHz built-in signal generator. MSO3000HD, MSO5000HD, MSO8000HD include arbitrary waveform generator options (50–60 MHz, 1 or 2 channels) — see each series page.
Choose if you want a single integrated bench instrument: stimulus + measurement in one chassis, no second power outlet or LAN cable.

Recommended Configurations
Education / Teaching Lab
UPO1082HD or UPO1152HD
Most affordable 12-bit entry. 80 or 150 MHz covers Arduino, Raspberry Pi GPIO, audio circuits, and most teaching content. 7" touch display, compact bench footprint.
Embedded Development
MSO1254HD-S or MSO3034HD
16 logic channels for digital bus capture. MSO1254HD-S adds a built-in 25 MHz generator for stimulus. MSO3034HD adds CAN-FD decode and 500 Mpts memory for longer protocol captures.
R&D Bench, Signal Fidelity
UPO2204HD or MSO5054HD
200–500 MHz at 12-bit gives genuine ENOB headroom for low-amplitude debug. 10.1" touch reduces menu drilling. MSO5054HD adds logic channels and 5 GSa/s for tighter timing analysis.
Automotive (CAN-FD, FlexRay, SENT)
MSO3054HD + AUTO bundle
500 MHz analog + 16 logic, automotive serial bundle covers CAN, CAN-FD, LIN, FlexRay, SENT. Step up to MSO5054HD for CAN-XL.
Power Electronics Validation

Mixed-Signal Embedded with Stimulus
MSO1154HD-S or MSO1254HD-S
One instrument: scope + 16-channel logic + 25 MHz generator. Saves bench space and a second LAN cable for prototyping work where stimulus and capture are interleaved.
General-Purpose Lab Workhorse
UPO2104HD or MSO3034HD
10.1" display, 4-channel 12-bit, mid-range bandwidth, expandable. Sweet spot for most engineering benches that aren't tied to a single specialty.
Why Choose UNI-T HD?
12-Bit Standard
Every HD model ships with a 12-bit ADC — not a high-resolution mode toggled off when you need bandwidth. Detail and dynamic range are baseline, not a premium option.
Integrated Toolset
Scope, FFT spectrum, logic analysis, protocol decode, power analysis, and (on -S/AWG models) signal generation in one chassis. Fewer instruments, fewer cables, less drift.
Upgrade Path
Bandwidth and feature options activate via software license — start with what fits today's project, scale up without replacing the instrument.
5-Year Warranty
3 years plus 2-year extension on every HD model — parts, labor, return shipping. Industry-standard is 3 years; this is 5.
FAQ
Is 12-bit always better than 8-bit?
For amplitude precision, yes — 12-bit resolves 4096 levels vs 256 for 8-bit, surfacing detail in low-level signals and improving measurement accuracy. For raw bandwidth and sample rate at the same price point, 8-bit scopes can sometimes go higher. Choose based on whether amplitude detail or top-end bandwidth matters more to your application.
What's the difference between MSO and UPO?
MSO = Mixed-Signal Oscilloscope, includes 16-channel logic analyzer capability. UPO = standard analog-only oscilloscope. If you're capturing digital buses (SPI, I²C, parallel logic), pick MSO. If you only need analog channels, UPO is more cost-effective per channel.
Can I upgrade bandwidth after purchase?
Yes on most HD series — MSO3000HD, MSO5000HD, and UPO2000HD all offer software bandwidth upgrade licenses. UPO1000HD and MSO1000HD bandwidth is fixed at purchase.
Can I add the signal generator later?
On MSO3000HD, MSO5000HD, and MSO8000HD — yes, the AWG is a software-activated option that can be added any time. On MSO1000HD, the -S variant ships with the generator built in; it's not field-upgradable. Choose -S up front if you want it.
What probes are included?
Each HD model ships with passive probes matched to its bandwidth. Differential, current, and high-voltage probes are available separately.
What's covered under the 5-year warranty?
Parts, labor, and return shipping for the full 5-year term. No registration or extended-warranty purchase required.
